Commotion in Teldeniya demanding release of individuals who set fire to kiosk

Police curfew has been declared with immediate effect in Kandy administrative district. it would be in force till 6 in the morning tomorrow (6). The cause for this was a clash which has occured between two parties in Digana area, Kandy. As a consequence of it, police had even fired tear gas.
Police Special Task Force was deployed in order to bring the situation under control.

A person who was employed as a lorry driver of a private institution in Teldeniya had been inhumanly battered last February 22nd and the victim had passed away last morning (04) at Kandy Hospital. The deceased is a 42 year old individual named Hipitiyegedera Kumarasingha hailing from Puwakgas Handiya, Moragahamula, Teldeniya.

He had been so brutally attacked that night itself by 4 young men travelling in a three-wheeler for not having allowed the three-wheeler to overtake Kumarasingha's lorry and had thus obstructed the road. Having been seriously wounded he had been later admitted to hospital and until the moment of his death he had been living with the aid of machines, it is reported. All 4 individuals who were taken into custody in this connection by police were remanded till March 07th.

In the meantime some outsiders in the area concerned have set fire to a shop belonging to a Muslim person in Teldeniya Moragahamulla area last night and had thus demolished it saying that the 4 persons who attacked are Muslim nationals and that the victim who was subjected to murder was a Sinhalese person. Subsequently police has taken 24 persons into custody and 10 of them are directly connected to this act of setting fire, it was reported. After that incident commotion was reported today near Teldeniya Police Station demanding that the persons so apprehended by police be released. Police resorted to firing tear gas in order to disperse the crowd.
